Film School Admissions consulting

Sam Johnson has worked as a college and grad school admissions consultant, with a particular focus on film and arts applications, for over 12 years. He has worked extensively with both international and US students on finding their narrative, putting their best foot forward in their essays and interviews, and, most importantly, long-term planning. His students’ previous successes include Harvard, Dartmouth, Berkeley, UCLA, UChicago, UVirginia, UNC, Cornell, Vanderbilt, Carnegie Mellon, and UMich among many others.

But the schools he has most enjoyed helping his students get into are the USC School of Cinematic Arts (Sam’s alma mater), NYU Tisch School of the Arts (summer program alumnus), UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, and Chapman Dodge College of Film and Media Arts because Sam loves working with students on both the admissions process and the labor-intensive—but creative—artistic portfolio. A graduate of the USC Peter Stark Producing Program MFA and former Vice President of the Harvard Lampoon, Sam has worked professionally as a script consultant for Amazon Studios and as a writer and producer in film and television. This experience allows him to provide unusually detailed, actionable feedback on the storytelling, artistic, and portfolio components of film school applications.

Why Choose SMJ Media

Many admissions consultants can help polish an essay. Very few can help a student develop a screenplay sample, shape a visual portfolio, prepare for a creative interview, or identify the artistic narrative that ties an entire application together.

Sam’s background in professional storytelling and film development allows him to work with students not simply as applicants, but as emerging artists. Because the practice is intentionally selective, students receive direct, individualized attention throughout the process rather than being handed off to junior staff members or generic editing services.

WHAT YOU GET

Unlike general admissions consultants, Sam specializes specifically in film, screenwriting, and other creative applications where the artistic portfolio is often just as—if not more—important than grades and test scores. Therefore, students receive individualized, one-on-one guidance throughout the admissions process, including:

  • Comprehensive initial strategy consultation focused on academic profile, artistic strengths, career goals, and competitive positioning

  • Personalized school selection and application strategy tailored to the student’s goals and creative interests

  • Long-term application planning with structured timelines, accountability, and deadline management

  • Creative portfolio development, including screenplay samples, short films, visual storytelling materials, pitch documents, and supplemental artistic submissions

  • Intensive feedback and revision support for personal statements, supplemental essays, artist statements, and creative writing samples

  • Story and narrative development designed to help students present a compelling and memorable artistic identity

  • Actionable video submission notes and suggestions

  • Interview preparation, including mock interviews and school-specific coaching

  • Activity list and extracurricular positioning to strengthen the overall application narrative

  • Transfer and graduate school admissions guidance where applicable

  • Final application review to ensure consistency, polish, and strategic presentation across all materials

  • Direct one-on-one access throughout the process rather than outsourced or junior-level advising
